What are the causes of a bad mood, and how to deal with them?

Sooner or later, we all face a terrible mood, get up on the wrong foot and feel sad. But what to do if there is no visible reason?

We have compiled a list of the most common causes of a bad mood and provided them with an effective antidote.

Reason 1: You take on too much

The fact that a bad mood negatively affects performance has long been known, but few people know about the opposite effect. If you work hard and are constantly under stress because of unfinished business, you will begin to wake up in a depressed state at some point.

What to do?

Sometimes a stressful situation needs to be experienced, for example, when it comes to defending a diploma or speaking at a conference. But if unfulfilled obligations become chronic, then this must be dealt with.

1) Start small: list all the things that worry you and arrange them in order of priority. Close one case a day – and soon, you should feel relief.

2) Learn to delegate: involve colleagues, friends, and relatives to do what you can to help when you cannot cope with all the burden of responsibility.

3) Decide on your goals: do you have to pull all these things on yourself? You may need to change your line of work. For example, if your job consists of a series of responsible performances in front of the public and you are constantly nervous, you are not getting any satisfaction from the process. There are people who, on the contrary, inspire and keep in good shape – yield this duty to them.

Reason 2: You focus on minor annoyances

Do you wake up in the morning in a good mood, and by the evening, you are immersed in sad thoughts? Of course, a lot happened during the day. Still, for some reason, you only remember the bad …

This means that you are accumulating minor problems: you are upset because of an “unliked” photo on social networks, you are angry at a long line in the store, you are worried that your girlfriend did not call back, although promised, and so on. But by concentrating on adverse facts, you only make things worse for yourself.

What to do?

You can save yourself in this situation only by working on yourself. Accept that you are driving yourself to a dead end and that a bad mood is only the result of your wrong perception of reality.

1) Put yourself in the place of the people who upset you. Why can’t you call your friend back? Why don’t you put likes on social networks?

2) Occupy the head of others. To avoid focusing on troubles, just get distracted by something: start learning a new language, enrol in a dance school, and bake cookies. When the day is scheduled, there is no time for sad thoughts, but there is joy from one’s achievements.

Reason 3: Guilt gnaws at you

For someone, even a minor offence can cause a feeling of guilt: for example, you forget to wish someone a happy birthday and constantly think about it. What can we say about situations when it seems to us that we have made an unforgivable mistake? Constant thoughts about what should have been done and how to fix everything do not allow you to live peacefully and can lead to natural depression.

What to do?

Act! The best thing in this situation is to try to fix everything and not scroll through the events in your head repeatedly.

1) If possible, apologise. We often correlate our actions with our framework, which, as it seems, exists in everyone. What you consider an unforgivable act can be made up for with a regular postcard.

2) Try to fix everything. If apologising doesn’t solve the problem, or you still feel guilty, what else can you do? When you have exhausted all possibilities, the good mood will return with the feeling of “I did my best.”

Reason 4: You are undernourished

Those who have ever been on a diet know that hunger can be irritating and cause a bad mood. The day has just begun, many things are planned, and the body has absolutely no energy – neither to complete tasks nor maintain good spirits.

What to do?

Understand nutrition and ensure that the calories consumed are sufficient for the proper functioning of the body.

1) Plan your day: if you know that you won’t have time to have breakfast in the morning and there won’t be time for lunch, the body will be stressed waiting for a hearty dinner. Make time for meals and, if necessary, set the alarm.

2) Seek professional advice. Even if you want to lose weight, the diet should be balanced and non-debilitating. Talk to your specialist and work out the ideal menu and meal plan.

Reason 5: You don’t get enough sleep

As with malnutrition, lack of sleep exhausts the body. Even ten years ago, American scientists found that 60% of sleep-deprived people are prone to emotional and psychological disturbances during the day. In other words, a constant lack of energy does not go unnoticed either by you or by those around you.

What to do?

It is imperative to get enough sleep, and here we are talking not only about mood but also about the fact that lack of sleep can cause diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

1) Set yourself a routine. If you can’t get enough sleep on weekdays and you think that you will make up for everything on the weekend, this is a mistake. To get the most out of your sleep, go to bed and wake up simultaneously every day. When this regimen is violated, our biological clock gets off.

2) Get the right amount of sleep. WHO has determined that an adult must sleep from 6 to 8 hours daily for everyday life. And healthy sleep is uninterrupted sleep. It is better to sleep 6 hours without waking than 8 hours with snatches.

3) Create the right environment. Many, trying to go to bed early, only get angry when they can’t sleep. A few simple tips will help cope with this problem: stop eating two hours before bedtime, do not exercise an hour before bedtime, and give up coffee and alcohol a few hours before bedtime.

Reason 6: You lack communication

Few people think about this, but loneliness leads to a bad mood. Even if a project has captured your full attention, sometimes you need to return to reality.

What to do?

Communicate as much as possible, even if you don’t need to.

1) Make a schedule. Make a list of friends you haven’t talked to in a while, and try to call or text at least one person on the list daily.

2) Reply to messages. Remember that life goes on around you. Answer calls and messages on social networks, even when you don’t feel like it.

Reason 7: You are sick

A sick person is often not in a good mood. But we must remember that a positive attitude and emotions help us recover faster. In addition, there are diseases in which a bad mood is the body’s cry for help, and this cry cannot be ignored.

What to do?

It is necessary to take all measures to regain a good mood.

1) Consult a doctor. If you feel that there are no objective reasons for a bad mood, visit a doctor.

2) Create all the conditions for a comfortable recovery. Focus on the things that please you even when you are sick: good books, visiting friends, music, and delicious food. Surround yourself with what you love. Also, move as much as possible – feasible physical exercises (even in intensive care!) Increase the endorphin content in the blood, which is responsible for a good mood.

Some people experience a kind of pleasure, sorting through problems in their heads, feeling sorry for themselves and constantly complaining to others about their troubles.

Alas, this threatens to destroy relationships with loved ones: not many can withstand an always sad and dull person next to them. In any case, dealing with an extended stay in a depressed state is necessary because it can lead to the development of natural depression and neurotic conditions, from which you will have to look for a way out already with a specialist.
